HIV Treatment Update: Everything The APP Needs to Know
The purpose of this workshop is to provide NP’s an update on the treatment of patients with HIV. It will include an overview of the issues that have impacted the uptake and use of PrEP, PEP, the newest mediations available for treatment, and a brief discussion on the impact of the end the epidemic initiatives.
Update on Vaping- What the evidence tell us
Since electronic nicotine delivery systems or ENDs (e-cigarettes), came to the US market in 2006, their use has increased exponentially, especially in the adolescents along with a proliferation and evolution of devices. Use of ENDs in adolescents has exposed them to nicotine containing tobacco products and well as other substances. There has been some evidence that e-Cigarettes may have some efficacy as a harm reduction tool in certain long term combustible tobacco users, the identification of serious known and potential harms are increasing. We will discuss the evolution of these products, current trends in use, known and potential harms, their potential as harm reduction tool, and their overall impact on public health, and changes in health policies.
Increasing Access to LARC: Evidence Based Counseling and Clinical Practices
Preventing unintended pregnancy by providing the most effective contraceptive methods without barriers is more important then ever. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is the safest and most effective contraception available. The implant and IUDs also have the highest patient satisfaction and continuation rates, and yet there remain many barriers to patients accessing these contraceptive methods. We will review common barriers and how to avoid them in your practice. We will discuss how to provide patient centered counselling about LARC methods, tools to provide the most up to date evidence-based care, and how to remove operational barriers in your practice. Whether you don’t provide LARC yet and want to hone your counseling skills and are interested in free training opportunities; or you are an experienced provider of LARC and want to update your practice and learn some helpful tips and tricks-There is something for everyone in this presentation.
To Prescribe or Not to Prescribe? Benzodiazepines in an Era of Prescription Drug Abuse
This presentation will focus on the class of anxiolytics known as the benzodiazepines. Over the years, prescribers have had a love/hate relationship with these controlled substances. Upon completion of this presentation, participants will learn the benefits and risks related to the safe prescribing of benzodiazepines for individuals with various symptom presentations. The presentation will address the risks and cautions related to the prescribing of benzodiazepines with various medications, including the opioids and stimulants and in various healthcare settings. Participants also will receive tips to identify the warning signs of benzodiazepine abuse and techniques to safely taper and discontinue these medications to minimize the discomfort of withdrawal.
Opioid Use Disorder: Diagnosis and Treatment
This presentation offers a comprehensive exploration of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), equipping nurse practitioners and healthcare professionals with essential tools to address this growing crisis. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the assessment and diagnosis of OUD using DSM-5-TR criteria, along with strategies for managing opioid intoxication, overdose, and withdrawal. The session will also cover evidence-based treatment options, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, emphasizing a patient-centered approach. The Endocrine Files: Navigating the 2025 Diabetes Guidelines Updates
*Supported by an educational grant from Novo Nordisk This presentation will provide information about the new 2025 diabetes guidelines updates published by the American Diabetes Association. Updates to diagnosis, monitoring, lifestyle, and long-term concerns will be outlined as well as highlights of new evidence. Emphasis will be placed on medication treatment for T2DM.
Immunotherapies – What do Primary Care Providers Need to Know?
This presentation will introduce primary care providers to the mechanism of action of immunotherapies, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapies and review several common immune-related adverse events. This presentation will also review the treatment of immune-related adverse events and offer best practices for primary care providers that co-manage patients with cancer.
Psychotropic Stewardship
The off-label use of psychotropics to manage the neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with dementia is historically widespread. This is despite evidence showing limited benefits and high mortality risk. This interactive presentation is designed to explore a root cause analysis of these neuropsychiatric symptoms using an interdisciplinary approach. A review of recently approved antipsychotics for dementia related agitation will be discussed.

Complicated and Uncomplicated UTI’s: Latest in Treatment Options
Uncomplicated and complicated UTI’s are commonly encountered in primary care and emergency settings. Using a case study approach, this session will focus on the management of a UTI’s in the following: the older individual, the person with an indwelling catheter or a structural abnormality, and those with pyelonephritis. In addition, a discussion regarding antimicrobial resistance and its impact on treating the complicated and uncomplicated UTI will be offered.

I have been a critical care nurse practitioner for fifteen years at Umass Memorial Medical Center and a clinical instructor at the University of Massachusetts Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing in Worcester, Massachusetts. My clinical and academic interests have focused on the care of the critically ill, particularly those that survive critical illness. I have given lectures and poster presentations at local, regional, and national conferences on this topic. I am currently engaged in writing manuscripts, conducting research, and implementing quality improvement projects focused on the care of the ICU survivor.
Alexander Menard, DNP, AGACNP-BC
Alexander Menard, DNP, AGACNP-BC is an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Track at the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing in Worcester Massachusetts. He is a practicing Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in Trauma & Surgical Critical Care at UMass Memorial Medical Center for the past 8 years. His academic interests include topics surrounding acute and critical care, simulations and integration of technology into classroom experiences.
Alex is a member of the American Associate of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). He's a well-known speaker and author, having presented at multiple conferences and is well published on a variety of critical care topics. He immensely enjoys both of his current roles which allow him to combine his passion for patient care and educating future advanced practice nurses.
Lisa Mathis, MSN, FNP-BC, Nurse Practitioner
Lisa has been in the field for over 30 years. For 21 years she has been practicing as a nurse practitioner, specializing in critical care, pulmonary, and hospital medicine. Her experience is in the hospital as well as the office setting, with her main focus being pulmonary medicine.
Currently Lisa is the ANCC program director with NPACE. Prior to that she had practiced solely within the hospital. She has specialized training in ventilator management and the care of critically ill patients. This specialized training gave her the opportunity to work in a long-term acute care facility specializing in vent weaning of patients with COVID.
Lisa is an award-winning author of a medical suspense thriller and enjoys writing as a hobby. Her biggest fans are her co-workers and the medical personnel that she works with since they can relate to her stories. The heroes in her novels are nurses and nurse practitioners!
Linda Suplicki, RN, MSN, ACNP, CCRN
Linda Suplicki RN, MSN, ACNP, CCRN is an acute care nurse practitioner specializing in advanced heart failure and mechanical circulatory support. She brings with her over 25 years of experience in heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and cardiogenic shock. She has both published and presented nationally on improving outcomes in patients requiring mechanical circulatory support and cardiogenic shock. She was instrumental in developing the first cardiogenic shock team in the state of New Jersey. Her passion for excellence in care has driven her to change the landscape of heart failure emphasizing the importance of developing best practices and utilizing a teams-based approach to improve quality outcomes.
