Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is generally the most effective, most rapid treatment for severely depressed or acutely suicidal patients. Its mortality rate is much less than that of depression. ECT is the treatment of choice for psychotic depression and is also useful for the patient with poor response to medication.
