An NP is an “advanced practice nurse” who can assess, diagnose and treat patients. An NP's scope of practice—in other words, their job duties and responsibilities—is more advanced than that of an RN. The NP profession is more than 50 years old, and more than 200,000 NPs are currently in practice in the United States. \n \nHow Is an NP Educated? \nAn NP must become an RN before progressing to an NP education program. For many years, a master’s degree has been the entry-level degree for NP practice. Today the NP profession is transitioning to a doctoral degree as the entry to practice. The degree awarded is called a doctor of nursing practice (DNP). NP education programs are approximately 2 years in length and include classroom and clinical training. \n \nWhat Does a Nurse Practitioner Do? \nNPs provide a full range of primary, acute and specialty health care services, including: \n \n•\tOrdering, performing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays \n•\tDiagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and injuries \n•\tPrescribing medications and other treatments (NPs have the authority to prescribe medications in all states) \n•\tManaging patients' overall care \n•\tCounseling patients about their health\n

"body": "APEA Welcomes Betty Vicknair, APRN, MSN, PNP to our staff. We are excited to have Betty on board to share her knowledge and wisdom with us! \n \n
Betty received\nher Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) degree from Tulane University\nMedical Center, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 1977.\nHer nursing background was in surgical intensive care and pediatrics.\nHer PNP clinical practice included twenty-seven years with a group of\nrenowned pediatricians in New Orleans, Louisiana until Katrina changed\nthe face of healthcare. For the past eight years, she was an Assistant\nProfessor in Pediatrics at Charity School of Nursing. In January 2014\nshe joined Advanced Practice Educational Association as a Nurse\nPractitioner Faculty member. \n \nBetty has presented at the local, regional, and national levels\non pediatric and educational topics. In 2010 she was nominated for the\nSeymour Weiss Excellence in Teaching Award and in 2013 she received the\nEndowed Professorship Award. She has served on the Executive Board of\nthe Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners (LANP) and numerous\ncommittees since 2006 and over the past four years has coordinated\nLANP's Primary Care Conferences which educate nurse practitioners. Betty\nreceived her RN Diploma Degree from Mather School of Nursing in New\nOrleans; her BSN from William Carey College, New Orleans Campus; and her\nMSN from the University of Phoenix, New Orleans Campus.

This article provides an overview of what nurse practitioners do and how they are prepared for practice. \n \n\nWhat Is a Nurse Practitioner? \nA nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse (RN) who has obtained graduate level education and advanced clinical training. An NP is an “advanced practice nurse” who can assess, diagnose and treat patients. An NP's scope of practice—in other words, their job duties and responsibilities—is more advanced than that of an RN. The NP profession is more than 50 years old, and more than 200,000 NPs are currently in practice in the United States. \n \nHow Is an NP Educated? \nAn NP must become an RN before progressing to an NP education program. For many years, a master’s degree has been the entry-level degree for NP practice. Today the NP profession is transitioning to a doctoral degree as the entry to practice. The degree awarded is called a doctor of nursing practice (DNP). NP education programs are approximately 2 years in length and include classroom and clinical training. \n \nWhat Does a Nurse Practitioner Do? \nNPs provide a full range of primary, acute and specialty health care services, including: \n \n•\tOrdering, performing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays \n•\tDiagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and injuries \n•\tPrescribing medications and other treatments (NPs have the authority to prescribe medications in all states) \n•\tManaging patients' overall care \n•\tCounseling patients about their health\n
•\tEducating patients on disease prevention and positive health and lifestyle choices. \n \nNPs perform this work autonomously and in collaboration with other health care professionals. NPs work in all types of clinical settings, including hospitals, primary care and specialty offices, walk-in clinics, and the military. \n \nA characteristic that distinguishes NPs from other health care providers is their emphasis on the health and well-being of the whole person. NPs focus not only on the diagnosis and treatment of illness but also on health promotion, disease prevention, and health education and counseling. NPs utilize their training to help patients make smarter health and lifestyle choices, which can improve health and lower health care costs. \n \n\nWhat Is the Job Market Like for NPs? \nFor several years, national surveys have ranked the NP profession as one of the top career choices. This is due to high demand, high salary and high career satisfaction. "body": "APEA Welcomes Betty Vicknair, APRN, MSN, PNP to our staff. We are excited to have Betty on board to share her knowledge and wisdom with us! \n \n
Betty received\nher Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) degree from Tulane University\nMedical Center, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 1977.\nHer nursing background was in surgical intensive care and pediatrics.\nHer PNP clinical practice included twenty-seven years with a group of\nrenowned pediatricians in New Orleans, Louisiana until Katrina changed\nthe face of healthcare. For the past eight years, she was an Assistant\nProfessor in Pediatrics at Charity School of Nursing. In January 2014\nshe joined Advanced Practice Educational Association as a Nurse\nPractitioner Faculty member. \n \nBetty has presented at the local, regional, and national levels\non pediatric and educational topics. In 2010 she was nominated for the\nSeymour Weiss Excellence in Teaching Award and in 2013 she received the\nEndowed Professorship Award. She has served on the Executive Board of\nthe Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners (LANP) and numerous\ncommittees since 2006 and over the past four years has coordinated\nLANP's Primary Care Conferences which educate nurse practitioners. Betty\nreceived her RN Diploma Degree from Mather School of Nursing in New\nOrleans; her BSN from William Carey College, New Orleans Campus; and her\nMSN from the University of Phoenix, New Orleans Campus.
